Taking a Look at Health

This interactive chart, featuring colored icons, displays the major health issues facing Americans. The chart uses colored icons to display the results. The colors are explained in a legend below the chart.

This chart is somewhat usable by color blind. The colors used are bright enough and use fairly good contrast. However, combinations from the problematic color combinations are used. They are usable because of the brightness and contrast, but they are somewhat confusing. With some concentration, the color blind are able to use and understand the chart.

However, having to concentrate shouldn’t be necessary with added information other than color.

Not only is it a bad example colorwise (regarding people with a color defiency), but the visualization is just difficult to digest. Again, keep it simple by using a horizontal bar chart displaying the amount of people suffering from various levels of obesity (ordered from low --> normal --> overweight --> ... --> morbidly obese).
In addition it would be interesting to see this bar chart in so called "small multiples", for example by avg. household income, or by educational level, etc. to discover interdependencies.

    Thanks Xeradox/Andreas
